Job: Assistant Circulation Librarian

Full Time:

 35 hours per week with benefits.


Under the general supervision of the Head Circulation Librarian, the Assistant Circulation Librarian performs customer service and administrative duties relating to the circulation of library materials, as well as other related work.


The essential functions or duties listed below are illustrations of the type of work performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.

  • Assists in circulation activities, including incoming and outgoing materials and deliquent and/or lost materials.
  • Register and assist new patrons.
  • Resolve patron disputes pertaining to overdue fees, etc.
  • Interact with and provide assistance to patrons with a wide variety of needs and abilities.
  • Work accurately with detailed information.
  • Work independently.


Education and Experience

Minimum of an Associates’ Degree; two years of library experience or customer service experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Ability, and Skill

Knowledge of principals and practices of professioinal library work; knowledge of and proficiency in the use of computer systems, software, and information technology; knowledge of library policies and procedures and information resources.

Ability to use available resources to provide library services to library patrons.

Computer skills; interpersonal skills; written and oral communicatoin skills; planning and organizational skills.


Works under the general supervision of the Had Circulaton Librarian according to established procedures and department policies and standards; duties require independent judgment and initiative.

Work Environment

Work is performed in library conditions; work is affected by seasonal fluctuations, such as the school calendar and seasonal programs; regular schedule includes weekend and evening hours.

  • The employee operates computers, fax machine, scanner, copy machine, and other library and office equipment.
  • The employee has access to confidential patron records, and circulation information.
  • Errors could result in delay of service to patrons, monetary loss, or dmamge to library equipment.


This is a benefited position, salary range is $18.49 to $26.21 per hour in steps. Hours include some evenings and Saturdays.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to operate and view a computer screen.  Depth, color, peripheral and distance vision routinely required.  Regular lifting of up to 20 pounds.  Manual use of telephone, copying and facsimile machines, calculator and other computer hardware.  Ability to hear, talk, walk, sit, bend, reach, grasp with occasional need to climb, balance, stoop, kneel or crouch.  Often required to push or pull book trucks weighing up to 150 pounds. May be required to stand or sit for consecutive hours at a time.
